Wow, thank you for writing this. You've summarized what I've been struggling to define for the past 20+ years. Everything makes sense now, and confirms that my next career plans are not totally stupid.
That means so much to hear, Fred. The ideas here are all a work in progress as this new phase of work emerges. As you noodle on it, I'd be excited to hear what you'd add in from your experience.
Your content resonates with me bigtime. Early in my career, I was told you need to specialize - find a job, an industry and spend all your time learning about it...get deep and be an expert.....I thought, how f-ing boring is that! I rebelled and have been successful on the sales and marketing side for many different industries and now that AI is here to stay, the creative class (coined by Richard Florida - great reading) will take over IMHO.
That means a lot, Remy. And I couldn’t relate more to your story — I think a lot of the fractional community feels this way, and luckily stumbled into this type of work.
Also, I love Richard Florida’s work! First learned about him as I got roped into running a coworking and community space (pre we work!) in founded by a bunch of smart, kooky academics and creatives.
The freedom that comes from the portfolio life is mind blowing. It took me a while to learn how to manage the time freedom…It can be confusing too - especially for the generalists who may be interested in a ton of things and want to explore them all….or maybe that’s just me. 🤣 I still have trouble picking a couple and even more challenge monetizing them.

Totally. It’s the precious balance of “I should monetize this!” vs “Maybe I should sit down for a while!”
This is such a great comprehensive overview! Thanks for the shout-out as well, Shaina!
Thanks, David! And I just had to include you — I love your story, and love following along with how you’re building.
ahh thank you so much! keep up the great work!
